Birthday Wish
(Actually, 142 birthday wishes - 50 years from Mom, 50 years from Karen, 42 years from me)
In October of 2017, my Mom, Cassie, got a life changing call. It was her first born daughter, Karen, who was born when my mom was 17 and was given up for adoption. Not knowing any details of the whereabouts or life of her first daughter left a gaping hole in my Mom’s heart the last 50 years. What an amazing blessing to finally find each other!
We were all eager to meet in person. The original plan was for Mom and I to travel to Denmark (Karen's home) in the summer of 2018. This was going to be my mom’s first time out of the country. Then in January, my Aunt Dana, my Mom’s sister and best friend was hospitalized and soon after went into hospice care. I took a leave of absence from work to care for my Aunt through her dying process. Although there was financial help from family, I used all of my savings in order to care for my Aunt - savings that I had planned to use for a trip to visit my newly found half sister, Karen.
The death of my Aunt (and also my Mom's recent stroke in December) was a teaching to me in so many ways. An especially important lesson is to spend time with family and do what is important to you NOW - don’t put things off as we don’t know how much time we have. In this vein, I am humbly asking for your support to fund a trip for my Mom and I to meet Karen - long lost first born daughter and half sister. I’m not good at asking for help, but I feel a strong urgency to reunite and help bring some joy to my family. Our plan and biggest hope is for Karen to finally meet family after 50 years in Colorado, Las Vegas, and California.
I humbly ask for your support in creating the long awaited reunion of mother and daughter, Cassie and Karen. This support could be offering a place for us to stay in Boulder, Las Vegas, or LA, your moral support, or if you are so inclined, financial support. With great appreciation!
