Dustin's desperate path to healing won't happen without help

Dustin was hit by a car on or about 2-19-25. The person did not stop and Dustin laid broken, bleeding and thankfully unconscious on the road until someone reported a body on the side of the road. He was diagnosed with a Skull Fracture, brain bleed and pooling resulting in a Traumatic Brain Injury plus 19 broken bones/injuries. The staff at the hospital found Dustin's Mom via Facebook! Imagine getting an announcement at work, does anyone know someone from Augusta Georgia? Jen took the call and her world collapsed. Her son was on life support because he was hit by a hit and run driver and he will be homeless on July 31, 2025!

The unbelievable story is in detail below. But the reason we are reaching out is that we need help soon!

We are in desperate need of help for Dustin and appreciate anything you can donate.

For reasons unknown to man, God spared Dustin's life. He had to have a reason, perhaps he knows that Dustin has more good in him and God has given him precious time to develop it. I hope we can do the right thing to help that happen.

All of our options are going to require time and money. We never really wanted to ask for help. We were advised by many of the hospital staff that we should try. We really thought it was going to be ok and he would get approved before time ran out.

Social security is requesting a neurologist evaluation to consider benefits. The earliest appointment we have been able to get is on September 18 and the required follow up on October 14. The problem is that he will be homeless on July 31.

He can't survive homeless! We are desperate to either get an earlier appointment or help to keep him at the personal care home for 3 months so we can get a neurologist report to verify his diagnosis of cognitive and memory damage in order to obtain benefits for him. At that point, we can come up with a plan to bring him home and find him local doctors. The personal home said he can stay if he has the payment, the cost is $3,000 per month, $700 per week or $100 per day.

Now the really hard part. He should be going to a neurosurgeon for regular brain and memory checks and to physical therapy for his brain and body recovery. That doesn't happen because he is uninsured. He is now way over 90 days without the care he needs most to heal and regain strength. Everyday without physical therapy and memory screenings reduces his odds to ever reach a normal status.

Here is Dustin's story and injuries in detail:
Dustin was found on the road in a critical state. Once he got to the hospital they discovered that his lung had collapsed due to numerous broken ribs restricting his ability to breath.

-They put him on life support to buy time to remove the bones from his chest cavity and build a rib cage to give his lung space and time to heal.
-His right leg was shattered and there was traumatic damage to the ligaments, muscles and tendons. They repaired what they could and put an fixator cage on that leg in hope that enough bone could heal and grow. They were not sure if his foot would go back to normal.
-His left Clavicle was fractured.
-left scapular body with extension into scapular injury
-left forearm both bones fractured
-C7-T4 Left transverse process fracture
-Right zone 1 sacrum fracture
-Left transverse acetabulum fracture
-Right open medial condyle fracture of femur
-Right comminuted fibular head fracture
-Concern for right multi-ligamentous knee injury
-Left tibial spine fracture
-Left avulsion of the proximal fibula
-Concern for multi-ligamentous injury to the right leg
-Foot drop about the right lower extremity

Once he was finally ready for a regular room at a facility with physical and mental therapy, we were so happy. He seriously needed to be in a facility that provided all the care and therapy he needed.

Reality sets in, he is uninsured /status is medicaid pending.
After weeks of trying, it is determined that there are no rooms available to anyone that is uninsured. Because the law requires the hospital to arrange for every patient to be released to a safe place to reside, the hospital paid for his release to a personal care home for 90 days, that gave him a bed, meals, meds, and laundry service. That contract expires on July 31 and Dustin will be homeless.

Medicaid and Social Security status is checked on regularly. He is at a stand still because Social Security needs a current Neurosurgeon report in order to make a determination. His appointment for that is in September and October. We call regularly to see if there is a cancellation so Dustin can be seen earlier. Well we are out of time. He will be homeless in 7 days.

Dustin can’t walk without help, he struggles with short term memory and the ability to concentrate. He seems to try to use humor to distract from his disabilities. .

Even though Dustin was uninsured and the Hospital took wonderful care of him. They immediately applied for Medicaid and full social security disability on his behalf. He is in a personal care home that the hospital funded until July 31st. Social security is requesting a neurologist evaluation to consider benefits. The earliest appointment we have been able to get is on September 18. He will be homeless on July 31. We are desperate to either get an earlier appointment or get funding to keep him at the personal care home until he can get a neurologist report to verify his diagnosis of cognitive and memory damage in order to consider benefits or we come up with a plan to get him insurance and the care he needs at home.
