In 2010, a neighborhood boy in South Baton Rouge asked Dustin LaFont for help fixing his bike. LaFont helped the boy, word spread, and soon he was teaching more and more kids how to build, fix and take care of their bikes. Today, his nonprofit, Front Yard Bikes, provides a safe space and a vehicle of opportunity for hundreds of low-income students every year. They work to build a bike and learn skills like mechanics, welding, and cycling safety. Kids also receive mentoring and academic support that helps them stay safe, stay in school, and graduate. To date, 2,000 students have benefitted from the program.
