Downtown Northport Basketball Court Revitalization

Tax deductible
Dear friends and family, thank you for visiting our fundraiser. We have applied our love for basketball towards an exciting public works project in Downtown Northport to benefit the kids of the community. Please read on for more details:
  • Northport basketball has been an avenue for boys and girls to develop high character and positive self-esteem for more than 100 years.
  • The Northport High School 1995 Long Island Champion Boys Basketball team is spearheading an effort to refurbish the iconic basketball court in Cow Harbor Park in downtown Northport to create an accessible place where kids can discover and nurture a love for the game.
  • The Northport Village Board has approved a plan for a complete renovation that would yield a modern basketball court that reflects Northport’s high regard for youth sports. This GoFundMe campaign was created to raise the money to execute the plans.
  • Via a partnership with Eaton’s Neck Youth Basketball, the inclusive grassroots organization founded in 1969, donations are tax deductible and will go directly to the revitalization of the basketball court and its upkeep.
WHAT IS THIS COURT ABOUT?
  • The court is located in Cow Harbor Park on Woodbine Avenue in Northport Village (aka The Old Wooden Park).
  • It has been home to generations of kids playing basketball adjacent to the scenic harbor on the Long Island Sound.
  • In our combined lifetimes of experience, we’ve learned a new, top-quality court will promote a love for the game for the kids of Northport.
  • The revitalized court will include two new commercial-grade tempered glass backboards, state of the art rims and poles, a completely refinished and repainted surface, court markings, and new benches. The current plan expands the footprint of the court to about 50% the size of a high school court, which is 22% larger than it's current size.
  • The court will be dedicated in honor of John Kennedy, a humble, life-long resident of Northport Village and East Northport and long-time doer of charitable works in town, father of four and personification of the good qualities we would all want our kids to learn from sports.
WHO MAY DONATE TO THIS?
  • Anybody may contribute any amount towards this project. You do not have to live in Northport to participate.
  • If you, your child(ren) or your parents have benefited from sports, you are encouraged to support this project as a mechanism to provide others with the same benefit.
HOW MUCH MONEY IS BEING RAISED?
  • The fundraising goal is $100,000.
  • 100% of the donations (minus GoFundMe fees) will go directly to the court.
  •  Any surplus will be earmarked to future maintenance and upkeep of the court.
WHEN WILL THE RENOVATION HAPPEN?
  • The fundraising deadline is Cow Harbor Day, Sunday, September 19, 2021 (prolonged to resolve scheduling challenges).
  • Groundbreaking on the new court will be March of 2022 (now TBD).

WHO IS LEADING THIS INITIATIVE?
  • The 1995 undefeated Long Island Champion Boys Basketball team, who still remain friends. Each of their lives has been impacted positively by playing basketball from a young age and into adulthood.
  • They count themselves lucky to have grown up in a town that so vigorously supports youth sports, and to have attended a high school where on-court excellence has been the standard for the girls’ program (6 Long Island Championships) and the boys’ program (2 Long Island Championships).
  • Recognizing the shifting habits of children – including their own – towards more indoor activity and less time on playgrounds and in parks, the group of friends decided to act on this initiative that will give kids (and adults) a suitable destination to play.
  • Eatons Neck Youth Basketball, a Northport-based non-profit, is the perfect partner due to its shared goal of providing affordable and inclusive basketball to Northport kids for more than 50 years.
