Dora Brown and Teenage Mental Health

Donation protected
My name is Orrie. I’m 20 years old, and I work as a lifeguard while training to become an on-call firefighter. One day, I hope to work in international disaster relief.

I love the outdoors and staying active. Most days you’ll find me bouldering at my local climbing gym, going on long walks with my dog, playing guitar, or just hanging out with my mates.

Lockdown was a rough time for everyone, and for me, it had a huge impact on my mental health. I found myself in a dark place, feeling completely stuck. If it weren’t for my incredible mum, who raised me and my brother on her own, I don’t know where I’d be. She was the one who helped me reach out for support, and the first place she took me was Teenage Mental Health. Honestly, it saved my life.

I’ve always been passionate about helping others. It’s part of what inspired me to pursue firefighting and why I got involved with Dora Brown, a local charity that transforms homes for families living in crisis. Their work hits close to home for me. After lockdown, my own family home fell into disrepair and became too overwhelming to manage. I understand how hard it can be to live in an environment that doesn't feel manageable.

I’ve taken part in a few charity events over the years, from shaving my head for cancer research to helping run security at a New Year’s Eve charity rave, and this year, I’m taking on three physical challenges to raise money for both Teenage Mental Health and Dora Brown. Those three physical challenges are the Ipswich Hospital Abseil, the Orwell Ultra Marathon Challenge and the 3 Peaks 24 Hour challenge. I've got some incredible people joining me on my journey, who I am eternally grateful for.

Mental health support and a safe, stable home can change lives, I know that firsthand. Not everyone has access to those things, and I hope the funds raised will go toward therapy sessions for young people who need them and help Dora Brown continue creating safe, supportive spaces for families in our community.
