I would like to introduce you to Abram Wade Raglin.

This little boy celebrated his 3rd birthday in August 2022. Less than 2 months later, on October 27th I found Abram in the middle of the night, having a seizure. He had just crawled into my bed hours earlier needing to potty and wanting a drink. Soon, we found Abram suffered a Complex Febrile Seizure which left him with Anoxic Brain Injury. This was due to an unknown condition Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

Abram was airlifted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, where he tested positive for RSV and Rhinovirus. He also tested positive for EBV and CMV which were the indicators that led to his diagnosis of Secondary HLH. Upon his arrival at the trauma unit, he was on a ventilator and Critically Ill with status epilepticus and septic shock. He spent the next 10 days in PICU with 5 days of those still on the ventilator. Thanks to the amazing team of medical professionals, therapists and our God Abram survived and was released to come home on December 26th.

MRI and EEG revealed the seizures had caused severe brain damage, brain bleeds a hemorrhage larger on the left side measuring 0.8 cm in maximum, brain shrinking epileptic waveforms. Abram has volume loss around the brainstem and cerebellum as well. Abram is left unable to communicate, unable to swallow, can not support his head, or control his limbs. The neurology team could only offer the prognosis of “keep him comfortable “and that typically the most improvement will happen within the first six months.

Although it was a blessing to bring him home, Abram was now a child with lots of special requirements. Not only did he require 24-hour constant care which meant mom could no longer work and contribute to the family income, but he also now required a lot of special equipment. Some items were covered by Medicaid, but several recommended items were not, Abrams Food ( real food blends) gas drops, suppositories, and extra seating equipment.
