Raymond Settle was an outstanding band director and mentor for so many band students at Richland Jr. High and White Station Jr. High. He worked at Richland from 1971 to 1981, when he transferred to White Station Jr. High. He later became the Music Area Supervisor for the district until his death in 1991.
We all have fond memories of being in band class where Mr. Settle exemplified great devotion and commitment to his students; whether that be through careful guidance through a measure of music, or the stern look he would give – letting you know you were talking too much – while adjusting another student’s embouchure!
Simply put, he was a beloved teacher, remembered for shaping the future of his students. The We Want Music! Foundation, a Memphis based nonprofit started by Marc Willis, and where Dewun Settle is a founding board member, has developed the Raymond Settle Award to honor his legacy by inspiring future music teachers and their band students, just as Mr. Settle did.
The award committee is composed of the following former students:
Jeff Rust (1981)
Dewun Settle (1982)
Marc Willis (1982)
Irene Kauker-Montano (1984)
Jerry Settle (1985)
We are asking for your financial support to establish the award in Mr. Settle’s honor and support the work of WWM! Every gift counts. Mr. Settle showed up for us in ways that shaped who we are; he inspired, challenged, supported, and believed in us. We want to celebrate the incredible impact he had on our lives.
Please consider making a gift today, knowing that every donation matters --- we’re thankful for whatever you can contribute.
Thank you for being part of this.
Feel free to write your memories of Mr. Settle in the comments!
