Unimelb Students Support Staff- Solidarity Fund

Workers at the University of Melbourne have been bargaining for new work contracts since October 2022. Since then, 1000 NTEU members went on strike on May 3rd to fight for real improvements in their working conditions, including:

- 80% secure work

- Pay rise above inflation

- Better parental leave

- Work from home rights

- Paid gender affirmation leave & First Nations employment targets

The University of Melbourne has a track record of stealing 45 million dollars of workers wages and sacked hundreds of staff at the start of the pandemic. Over 50% of staff at the University of Melbourne are on casual contracts, with no job security or ability to plan for the future.

Management have shown little willingness to move on any of their key claims. Amidst a cost of living crisis, staff can’t wait any longer. That’s why staff are preparing for the possibility that they will have to take serious, sustained industrial action to win the contracts that they deserve.

As students, we have launched this fundraiser to show our unwavering support for the staff strikes on campus. We know that it is the hard work of staff who make this University run, and we want our tutors to be paid fairly. We believe that staff working conditions are student learning conditions, and that anything staff can win will directly improve the quality of our education. Our education is more than just a commodity - it is where we learn and grow.

We encourage community members and students to donate to the solidarity fund - every dollar will help a worker support themselves while they are on strike for a better university for us all!! This money will be sent directly to the NTEU University of Melbourne branch strike fund.
