Help our dear friend, Fatima, a new Canadian and recent arrival from Afghanistan!

Who we are:

We are a refugee sponsorship group that formed in winter 2021 to sponsor Ali and Nina, a vulnerable Hazara couple from Afghanistan who were under direct threat from the Taliban, and who had been separated for a decade. We were thrilled to be able to reunite them in Canada. Once they had arrived, we began working to bring Nina’s sister, Fatima to Canada. Our application was successful, and Fatima is now here in Canada!

Funds for Fatima:

In Afghanistan, Fatima was a teacher. She hopes to become qualified as an educator here in Canada. She is now out of the direct danger she was experiencing under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, but she needs time to learn English, adjust to life in Canada, and recover from the trauma she experienced before leaving Afghanistan. We are hoping to raise funds to support Fatima during her first year in Canada, so that she can afford a room of her own, groceries, a TTC pass, school supplies, and other basic necessities.

More about Fatima:

Like her sister, Fatima is Hazara, an ethnic minority who are persecuted by the Taliban and other groups such as ISIL. Her Hazara neighbourhood in Kabul continues to be the target of terrorist attacks.

Fatima is a highly skilled math teacher with a BSc in Mathematics. The school where she taught was bombed several years ago, and Fatima was lucky to escape with her life, but she has not been able to return to work since.

Finally, since the Taliban took over the country in August 2021, the freedoms of women have been significantly curtailed, meaning that Fatima could not leave the house without a chaperone and had no ability to work or study for the past three years.

Fatima has just arrived in Canada, and is already diligently studying English in a local full-time program to get to a level where she can work to support herself. She plans to qualify as a teacher here in Canada. It will take some time. Your donation will support Fatima on this journey so that she can settle comfortably in Canada, and continue to flourish in her career as an educator.
