On behalf of Charlie's family, it is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Chuck (Charlie) Sullivan. I am Robin Wahl, Renee's sister and Godmother to both Orry and Owen. Over the years, Charlie and I became trusted friends. When Charlie received the news that they had exhausted all treatment options for his stage 4 melanoma, he didn't wallow in self pity, he instead turned his attention on making sure his wife and sons would be alright. I am asking for your help to do just that.
We all have our own memories of Charlie (Chuck) Sullivan. The joyful details of these stories are unique, rich and personal for each of us. They span over 5 decades. When we tell each other these stories, we start to see the patterns that lie beneath the moments in Charlie's life.
This broader story is simple and beautiful. Charlie made decency and kindness his daily practice. He chose optimism and hope as his guiding principles and never wavered. Cynicism and despair were unwelcome in Charlie´s world.
Those of us who were fortunate enough to be close to Charlie know the power of his steadiness. His calm demeanor always seemed to bring forward the parts of ourselves we keep tucked away: the patient part, the brave part, the kinder part.
You knew you mattered to Charlie. You knew it almost right away. It didn´t matter if you were a friend for 45 years or you were shaking his hand for the first time. Charlie was a rare bird. A gem.
Charlie's family will need help as they chart the course of their lives without him. This will be a time of great change for his wife Renee and sons Orry and Owen. They will need support as they transition to new housing and plan for Owen´s education.
