Donate to Skyler's Journey as a Forest Firefighter

Hello everyone! My name is Heidi Winters. I am here to raise funds for my oldest son, Skyler Winters. He just turned 21 and he just started his new career as a Forest Firefighter. His career path has taken him all the way across the country. He has recently moved from our home in Bowling Green, KY to his first apartment in Pascoe, WA. He lives in Washington State and works in Oregon, for the Oregon Military Service. Now that he has gotten his first job and his first apartment, it is time for us to move all of his belongings to him. The easiest way to move his stuff is to hire movers which will cost around $2100. I am setting a total fundraising goal of $3000 so that he will have a little extra just in case the amount changes before I can book it or in case there are other expenses related to the move.

His father and I are so proud of him for following his passion. He has wanted to be a firefighter since he was little and now his dream has come true. It has been a long road to success. As a child, he had learning difficulties and struggles with ADHD. We sometimes wondered if he would ever make it through high school! After graduating high school, he went to forest firefighter training at Pine Knott Job Corps in Kentucky before finally graduating as an FFT2 (firefighter type 2) from Blackwell Job Corps Center in Wisconsin. A year after graduating the Job Corps program, he has gotten his first job in his chosen field. A job like forest firefighting can take him anywhere in the country, so he is now living in Washington.

He got the offer for an interview with Oregon Military Service, so he drove himself all the way to Oregon, not even knowing if he would actually get hired. Luckily, he did!! As a mom, I really consider that a feat in itself!

We would love to go to Washington to deliver his stuff ourselves. However, I am in a wheelchair with Cerebral Palsy and my husband, Skyler's father, works a very demanding job as a chef/kitchen manager at a very popular local restaurant. Unfortunately, he is not afforded enough time off work to make such a long trip and I don't have good enough health to make a long trip. That is why we feel that our only option is to hire movers.

I sincerely hope that others will relate to his story and situation. Thank you so much for contributing to my fundraiser.
