Donate to Provide Shelter for La Ceiba Families

The US is clearly a land of opportunity. If you don’t think so, travel to Central America.

We are currently doing some work in Honduras, a country bordered by Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador. While tourism helps provide jobs and puts food on the table in some Central American countries, that is not the case here in La Ceiba.

Honduras is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and now that we’ve spent some time here, we can clearly see why some Hondurans dream of being granted a visa to live in the US. There is crime, extreme poverty, and the occasional hurricane that whips through, leveling their houses and businesses.

People here are some of the most impoverished we’ve seen in our travels. Are they happy? Most are, but do they struggle every day to eat and to pay their bills? YES! Even though poverty levels here are extreme, they ask us for very little. We give what we can, but what is needed most are jobs and safe, dry housing.

Last week, we traveled with a missionary from “Helping Hands, Helping Hearts” to a worn dirt path where many families live… no, they exist. What we saw were three families, with a total of 11 people, living in a makeshift metal shack divided into three separate living quarters. There’s no running water, they “borrow” electricity from a nearby city pole, and have no septic system. When it rains, their metal shack floods, their roof leaks profusely, but they continue to be grateful for their mattress on the floor and never stop smiling when we stop to talk.

So, we have created this GoFundMe page in hopes of raising enough money to help build a 20x40 cement block home that would house these three families comfortably. Each family will have their own private room with beds and a bureau, and they will share a common space with a kitchen, living room, and one bath.
Cost of construction materials is approximately $15,000, and labor for the Hondurans to construct it will be another $5,000. These families still won’t have running water, legal electricity, or a septic system, but they will be dry and comfortable… and happy and healthy.

If you can help, I can guarantee that the families will be eternally grateful.
