In 2011, I tragically lost my father due to a motorcycle accident. At the time, I was 11 years old, and my adolescent mind couldn’t very much comprehend the feelings that I was dealing with at such a young age.
Following the death of my father, I went to local support group sessions with kids my age, as well as some older and some even younger. This support group that I went to weekly created a safe space for me that, at the time, was a major thing I needed to process the grief I was going through. It felt nice being around other kids, being able to talk with each other about what might be bothering us on our minds or talk about funny stories of past times. Group activities were always a nice thing to do too, getting our minds off of how we were feeling.
I am raising money to support these sons and daughters dealing with grief from the passing of a mother or father, to get them the support they need to be able to get through these tough times. The National Alliance of Children’s Grief is a non-profit organization that raises awareness about the needs of children and teens who are grieving a death and provides education and resources for anyone who supports them. Their vision is for no child to have to grieve alone. Also advocating that all children, no matter where they live or their circumstances, should have the support and resources they need to positively adapt to a loss in their lives.
