My name is Dr. Toni. At the age of 60 I found myself without work, a home, or money, and so I am working my way up to buying some land and building a retreat for myself and my communities in the middle of nowhere. This is the story of that journey, from starting with my motorhome Antimony until I complete the entire place and can officially retire -- in 2030.
Join me as I raise funds, prepare, plan, experiment, and experience this journey from a very humble start to a final form.
No raffles, sweepstakes, giveaways, or returns on investment are offered in exchange for any donations made to this GoFundMe. This isn't about anything like that.
Polkadot Adventures combines my love of personal adventure, challenging oneself, D&D, giving back to my communities, experimenting with gardening, and defying expectations.
The objective for this specific GoFundMe is to raise the money to purchase 10 or more acres of land well off the beaten path, all of it as self-sustaining as possible.
Among the things that will be present are:
- Camping spots with semi-permanent tents on decks for up to 8,
- Shared main house with library, meeting space),
- Outdoor communal kitchen,
- Longer term cubby style housing,
- Large greenhouse,
- Power House (Solar and Wind energy, 18 kWh with 6000 watt PV),
- Game House,
- Bath House (with 2 hot showers and tile tubs),
- A large stocking pond for trout,
- A chicken run,
- and more as it comes to me.
From rainwater collection and filtration to solar energy and methane generation, the goal of the project is to minimize the need to engage with the larger infrastructure while still retaining contact, communication, and community, both in the larger sense and locally.
The primary building will be located mostly below grade, with a broad open area in the center that will feature shade trees and relaxing places, as well as a communal kitchen for folks who are staying there to use, and spaces for playing D&D or other games.
The greenhouse will be used to grow off-season crops and vegetables in a walpini-style dugout fashion that only really has the roof exposed. The in-ground aspect of the buildings allows a more stable all-year-long temperature, even in hot summers and cold winters, as the likely location is over 5500 feet.
Methane will be produced from waste materials and used to provide gas, with propane as a backup. This is a general goal, and is subject to some challenges from target area permitting.
The overall project is estimated to take three to five years for completion, and it's mostly me doing a lot of the work myself.
While my degrees in Sociology, Psychology, and Religion aren't much help, my lifelong interest in and experimentation with the essentials of infrastructure drive much of the work and the idea, with an expected "full house" of up to 12 people at any given time, plus four additional campsites scattered across the land.
The goal is a minimum of 10 acres, with existing trees, decent road access (though dirt and bumpy is expected) and a full term overall cost in materials of roughly 45,000 USD.
The budget for the property is 24,000 USD, allowing me to pay it off within the 3 year period if not sooner, and still be able to devote time, energy, labor, and love into the property as a whole.
Over the next several months, I will add some additional information (documents and plans) and set up a Ko-fi, and the video channel will document the steps I take to get there, as I prepare for it by staying in Quartzite for the winter and then, hopefully, can move forward to the property by the middle of next year (or work on paying it off).
The initial goal is for a down payment, which is generally considered to be 20% of the total. That is, presently, 6000 dollars, plus funds to build the required septic system, making the total into 7,000.
When the land is finally secured, it will be set up in a cooperative trust that will kick in on my passing, ensuring that the property and its goals are preserved for future generations.
YouTube will hold videos, the Ko-fi will have recipes, cookbooks (eventually), and whatever else I can come up with as I go.
All of it is tied as well to my effort around a D&D setting called Wyrlde -- I am taking all the things I plan to do in my retirement and putting them together -- as well as written updates. I like the game, and I like the idea of being able to go on a retreat with your group and camp comfortably and play a game with all the fancy tools like a digital map table and such leading to a higher level of immersion and a memorable experience.
Every little bit helps, and the project is massive -- and for some folks, once the land is gained, there will be ways to donate and establish memorials: such as the memorial that will be made of bricks dedicated to those who have been killed by anti-trans violence.
