Hello, my name is John, I go by Perry. I have been fighting for basic 50/50 custody for my daughter for the last 4 years. When my journey began, I hired a local attorney and paid a $1500 deposit. I received a court date and had to put an additional $1500 down to cover more costs since the court was out of town. The first hearing I was given temporary orders: 1st, 3rd, & 5th weekend Saturday and Sunday from 12pm-5pm. I live an hour and a half away, so these visits have been difficult on me financially, but I have shown up regardless.

Our next hearing was postponed due to my attorney being involved in a car wreck. Some time passed, and I reached out to her for an update on the hearing date. I received no response. Multiple attempts and no word back. During one of my visits, the mother asked why I was not at the hearing… I had not received any information about this hearing. I called the court and was directed to my attorney, yet again no responses. Due to funds, I was unable to find a new attorney.

In March of 2025, I was able to place a $3500 retainer fee down for a lawyer in the county of the courts to avoid travel fees. We have had several bumps in the road. The fact that the original orders were NEVER submitted to the courts, and neither attorney previously signed said orders. We have had 3 scheduled hearings I have driven an hour and a half to, missed work, just to be told they have to be rescheduled. I have a new hearing on Sept 5, 2025, and have been promised I will see a judge.

Circumstances have changed, I am now wanting to seek custodial rights. To keep my daughter's struggles private, I think this is the best option. My daughter is also expressing she wants to live with me, she is also old enough to decide this. Her mom is going to fight me tooth and nail, and my attorney said it’s going to cost thousands more to do so. I am not in a financial spot to dish out said thousands more.
