My grandson Zyere is at OU Medical Center for the second time in the last 6 weeks. He has had to go through rhinovirus, pneumonia, and COVID. He was aspirating, has acid reflux, and has had feeding tubes so that he can eat. In the last 6 weeks, he's had about a week and a half where he could eat normally from a bottle. We are now figuring out that he has developed a condition in which he is afraid of the bottle. His throat was swollen from all the viruses, and he has an issue with his voice box, which we have found makes it all hard for him to swallow. He is now losing weight and has been diagnosed with failure to thrive. The doctors are referring him to an inpatient program where he will have to learn how to drink from a bottle again and overcome his aversion to it. He was basically choosing to breathe over eating, which has developed this aversion. The program for babies is the only inpatient program available. There is a waiting list, so we are battling with the decision of putting feeding tubes back in. He is 6 months old and under 13 lbs now. My daughter now has had to convince them that not only does he not want to eat from the bottle, she can tell it's making him uncomfortable for some reason, like he's in pain. Throughout all these problems he's had, it feels like my daughter is having to research each issue he's having and ask the doctors to please consider what she's saying, and only then do they even take measures to figure out the problem. Zyere has two sisters, 20 months old and three. My daughter is ready to come home to all of her kids. Needless to say, life goes on during times like this and bills have to be paid. Macy isn't leaving Zyere's side and her family is having to rely on one income right now. They have no idea how long it's going to take to help my grandson, and she won't let them release him until she feels like he's on track to being healthy again. If it is within your means, please, any contribution, no matter how small, will help keep their household going and relieve some stress. Please keep Macy and her little family in your prayers.
