My dad was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and the medical bills quickly overwhelmed us. Between the cost of his treatment and everyday expenses, we could no longer afford rent or keep up with car payments. On top of everything, my dad's employer made mistakes with his paychecks, causing delays that left us in an even more desperate situation. For a while, we were living in a hotel, trying to stay afloat, but when his paycheck issues weren’t resolved in time, we were forced out and had to live in our car for several days.
During that time, we walked for nearly four hours just to get downtown, where we could find a place to charge our phones, cool off from the heat, and try to figure out our next steps. We searched tirelessly for a homeless shelter, but every time we called or visited, they were either full, not accepting new people, or just didn’t answer. It took four long days of walking, waiting, and hoping before we were finally accepted into a shelter.
While we're grateful to have a roof over our heads now, the situation is far from stable. The shelter has strict rules—my sisters and I aren't allowed to stay there without an adult, which means our dad can’t go to work. And without income, there’s no way for us to save up for a place of our own and break this cycle. We’re in a tough spot, and what we truly need now is financial help so we can move out of the shelter and begin rebuilding our lives in a safe, stable home
