As my birthday month approaches, I can’t help but reflect on the place and the people who shaped me — La Guama, Dominican Republic. Growing up there taught me the values of gratitude, humility, and community. No matter how little we had, we always found ways to help one another.
Much of that spirit came from my mother, whose kindness knew no limits. She showed me that true joy comes from giving — from extending your hand, sharing what you can, and lifting others up. Her example became the foundation for how I see the world and the meaning of life itself: to give back with love and purpose.
That same spirit lives on through CIGA (Comité de Inmigrantes Guamenses Ausentes) — a group of La Guama residents who now live outside the country but remain deeply connected to our roots. Through year-round donations and fundraisers, CIGA supports our hometown in many ways, and every December we come together for one of our most cherished traditions: the annual Christmas food basket drive.
This year marks the 11th anniversary of this beautiful initiative. Each basket is filled with essential food items that allow families to enjoy a joyful Christmas dinner together — a small gesture that carries a big message: you are not forgotten, you are loved, and you are part of something bigger.
In honor of my birthday — and in tribute to my mother’s legacy — I’m asking for your help to continue this tradition. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us reach more families and keep the heart of La Guama beating strong.
Thank you for joining me in celebrating another year of life by giving hope, nourishment, and love back to the community that raised me. ❤️
With deep gratitude,
Julianna
