Donate to help women in Uganda learn new skills

My name is Kyla and I am raising funds for a group of women in Bigodi, Uganda. Poverty remains deeply rooted in Uganda’s rural areas, with most families living off of $1 per day. People in rural areas depend on farming as the main source of income and 90% of rural women work in the agricultural sector. For this reason, women find themselves in vicious circles of poverty, working between 12 and 18 hours a day, and leaving no time for education and self-care

 

In Bigodi, Western Uganda, poor yield seasons have left many with little food and no income.

This issue has been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic as many of the local women also worked in the tourism industry, creating souvenirs for visitors. Fluctuating visitor numbers to ecotourism sites, which has been exacerbated by the lockdowns, means the community is facing new challenges and running out of options.

 

As a solution, we would like to offer vocational training to women free of charge. Through these capacity-building programs, community members learn skills that can be used to create new income earning opportunities while also becoming stewards of the environment.

 

Permaculture training allows the community to address issues of food scarcity and environmental degradation, while literacy classes and artisan workshops allow women to diversify their skill set.

 

A permaculture course for 30 people will be $1100.

 

One year of weekly literacy classes for 10 women will be $2200.

 

Capacity building workshops with TEXFAD, a certified agricultural institute, will be $2000.

 

Artisan training with Josephine Musaka from the School of Commercial Industrial Art & Design will be $3000.

 

All additional funds will provide women with the materials and tools they need to get started.
