Hi, my name is Aaron, and I am fundraising for Terry Upton.
From 1985 to 2012, Terry was a successful, hardworking, self-supportive, clean living, professional landscape contractor in San Diego's finest areas. Terry was living the dream! He was paying a mortgage on his home that he loved, bodyboarding nearly daily, traveling the world, raising and spending quality time with his 24-year-old son, Nate. Work dried up as the economy took a turn and ultimately he was forced to short sell his home in 2013.
In 2015, tragedy struck again. Terry lost his son, Nate in a free-diving accident in Mexico. Terry was struggling to stay afloat and trying to cope with his losses, and the sudden loss of his son was absolutely devastating.
Within a couple of years, Terry bounced back emotionally and financially. In January of 2017, Terry was blessed with another son, Thane Upton. Thane is now 5 1/2 years old. Terry has dedicated his entire existence to raising Thane. Through a narrow legal loophole, Thane’s mom was able to take him to Texas. Now Terry and Thane’s mother are in a custody battle.
After losing his oldest son, raising Thane has become Terry's life commitment. Thane is an adept swimmer, surfer and diver. He is also an excellent fisherman. Fishing in Baja with his Dad is his favorite thing to do. Thane also loves, hiking, rock climbing and all activities in and around the Pacific Ocean. Thane is a wonderful human being, a true beacon of light and joy...just like his late brother Nate.
Being a single, working Dad is a lot in itself. Now Terry has had to become his own attorney. Besides being extremely challenging for Terry, it has also been financially draining. He has already spent tens of thousands of dollars of his own money fighting for his son. Terry is the last person to ask anyone for help or support, and he has always pulled his own weight. He has helped others in the community when they have been down and out. Terry feels uncomfortable asking for help, but he realizes that seeking funding may be the only way to pay for proper legal representation.
Terry is seeking a professional attorney, with integrity, that cares about the outcome of the case. Terry needs an attorney willing to fight for a child's right to maintain a relationship with the father.
Terry needs funding for excellent legal representation to ensure that Thane starts kindergarten in San Diego. San Diego is Thane's home.
Not only will Terry need lots of love, prayers and help to pay for the fees of an excellent attorney, but he will also need some financial support to help pay for flights to visit his son in Texas. All of the travel back and forth adds up and becomes quite expensive. Terry will also need financial support to be comfortable through this stressful and burdensome time. He realizes that there may be a long battle ahead, but he is determined to fight for the custody of his son to give him the best possible life a child could have.
I am asking that you give whatever feels appropriate and comfortable for you. For some, this may be $5; for others, it may be thousands of dollars, and it doesn’t matter how much because every single penny counts right now. Our goal is $50,000; if we can raise more, that would be… well, just amazing! As a close friend to Terry, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
