On December 9th, 2023, the newlywed mother and stepfather of Sonia Josaphat, 25, were killed by her mother’s former husband at the couple’s home in West Palm Beach, Florida. Sonia’s natural father turned himself in for both shootings. As the oldest of her mother’s three children, Sonia became in a moment the guardian of two younger siblings and the leader of her remaining household. The family has not publicly released the names of their slain mother and stepfather while they grieve privately for both. But Sonia and her siblings must now face the loss of a man and woman married just one week before both were killed, who exemplified lives of hard work and compassion in medical and spiritual healing. At 20 years old Sonia’s mother left Haiti for Florida, embarking on a caregiver career that led her to become a nurse practitioner. Her husband was a pastor in Palm Beach. Both were devoted to helping others and encouraging the sick and disheartened. Both were struck down at just the moment that the couple had married to secure a better future for a mother and three children. The family’s trauma will be lifelong, while their dreams for now are shattered.
