Real Monaro is a community group aimed at fighting the proposed Coonerang Windfarm project in the NSW Monaro region. We are NOT against renewable energy, rather the LOCATION of this development and the enormous visual impact it will have on our Monaro community and those who visit our region.

The Sydney developer SOMEVA is proposing 33 x 266m wind turbines adjacent to the culturally significant area known as The Brothers (or Gugang) named after an Ngarigo legend. The proposal is located on both sides of the Monaro hwy between Cooma and Nimmitabel- a designated scenic corridor and unique drive. It is in close proximity to these townships and will be seen from 40+ km away.

The turbines will become the overriding feature of the Monaro plain, towering over The Brothers and The Peak; iconic landmarks on the Monaro Plain

We are working to get a scenic overlay over this unique area that has been recommended for inclusion as a UNESCO BIOSPHERE & GLOBAL GEOPARK RESERVE, as well as the National Heritage and NSW Heritage Lists.
