My name is Monica Moreno Krohne, and I am reaching out for support for my sister Paola and my nephew Jacob, who are facing an incredibly challenging time.

In 2024, David—Paola’s husband and Jacob’s father—was diagnosed with liver cancer. Tragically, on Tuesday the 10th of February, David lost his battle with this terrible disease.

David and Paola’s Australian journey began in 2005 when they migrated here, full of hope to build a better life. Through hard work—often juggling several jobs—they managed to save enough to open their first coffee shop in Kelvin Grove, followed by Petrichor on Racecourse Road. Their passion and dedication to hospitality brought a taste of South American food and warmth to every customer. When COVID hit, their dream was shaken, but the wonderful Hamilton and Ascot communities rallied behind them, helping their business survive.

After making it through COVID, they tried to secure their family’s future by opening a new business—Verde and Sweet, Paola’s dream. Sadly, despite their best efforts, the business left them with significant debt. Still, David and Paola’s resilience never wavered. They worked long hours to keep Petrichor afloat and to pay off their debts, though it meant sacrificing their chance to own a home.

When David fell ill, his condition rapidly deteriorated. Unable to work, he relied on Paola, who was left to run Petrichor, care for Jacob, and look after David. The mounting pressures forced them to sell assets and draw on access to David’s superannuation to cover living expenses and medical bills.

To make matters worse, Paola is caught in a lengthy dispute to access Davids insurance leaving both her and Jacob extremely vulnerable.

I am seeking help—not just financially, but also from the community—to help my sister Paola and nephew Jacob rebuild their lives. The funds raised will directly support them with:

• Allowing Paola to take some time off work to grieve and care for Jacob

• Covering the costs of moving to a new rental

• Helping with their expenses

• Reducing some of their debts where possible
