Dear donor! My wife was not able to get pregnant due to some health issues. After a long treatment, surgery, and so many prayers, and fastings, then finally, after seven years, a miracle happened, she became pregnant, and we were blessed with a baby boy whom we called Nicholas. I'll never forget, one day after praying for this miracle, a thought came to my mind, and I saw my wife and me in our living room playing with a little boy. He is six years old, very smart, adorable and has a great heart.
Two months ago, we discovered he has a terminal disease called Duchenne. The doctors told us that he would stop walking and lose mobility around the age of 10-12. We were devastated! He's on steroids now to gain temporary strength and mobility. He needs physical therapy and frequent medical assessments of his respiratory system and the side effects that steroids cause in children. I just graduated from BYU Idaho, and I had to work fewer hours to be able to finish school in July, and this challenge came unexpectedly upon us.
We came as immigrants from Brazil in 2015, and we sold our business to go to the US to obtain an education and seek a better life. I studied hard, worked hard, and went through a painful immigration process so my wife and I could become permanent residents according to the laws of the United States, and with so much effort and faith, we did it! We overcame the long, expensive, and complex process of immigration.
We want to raise funds to pay some bills and take Nicholas to beautiful places in this country while he can still walk and play with his little brother Thomas. All our family lives in Brazil, and they have never met him except my mother-in-law, and we wanted to take him there next year, so the rest of our family may meet him. He speaks English and Portuguese and is always curious about science and how the human body works. He asked us to buy him a doctor costume that he is wearing in the picture above, and he loves to watch videos about the human body and the universe.
He has great faith in God. He prays with us in the morning and at night; since his body cannot produce muscles, he prayed to God, asking that the fat in his body may be transformed into muscles and that prayer touched our hearts. I believe that miracle is possible because Christ once turned water into wine, but we must also be prepared for God's will. Nicholas will go through a long treatment and soon become a subject in clinical trials where doctors have been trying to find a cure for decades with no success besides slowing down the disease so kids may walk and live a little longer. Besides the donation, we want to ask everyone to pray in faith that a miracle may happen if it is according to the will of God and that he may still walk and run during his lifetime. We believe in Christ, in his power and his goodness.
