McKalya Strong

Hello! My name is Brook, I am McKalya’s big sister, thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Saturday September 16th, 2023 McKalya was at her best friend’s wedding, she left with the bride’s niece to get her bestie some comfy shoes for the reception. During that time the vehicle they were in was tboned by a truck causing the car to flip. McKalya coded on scene and was intubated on sight to keep her stable for the helicopter ride to the trauma center. (I arrived within 20 minutes and it felt like it took FOREVER for her to get there). She sustained several injuries and broken bones and is in very critical condition, she has a very long road to recovery. But she is a fighter & she has proved that every single day.

These funds will be used for McKalya as her medical bills are already astronomically high, and for her family who has not left her side and have had to take time off of work.

It hearts my heart so bad to type this part out, but if she doesn’t make it through this, the funds will be used for her end of life needs.

We are so blessed with our tribe, if you are unable to assist financially please consider donating blood and fill out a credit to patient form. If that is something you want to do, get with me and I will get all of the info sent your way!

Thank you again for stopping by, for any additional questions feel free to reach out!

11/14/2023 update

We appreciate everyone’s love, prayers and support. I know 100% we wouldn’t be where we are at without y’all.
McKayla was in a terrible car crash that has completely devastated our families world on 9/16/23. She was in ICU at OU hospital for 34 days, she’s been at an LTAC (step down ICU) since.
In 60 days she has been through so much. 15 days she was in a coma, 47 days she was on a ventilator, 49 days until we heard her sweet voice (first word mom).
Her injuries as we know so far include a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury, broken neck, broken bones on her face & skull, many broken ribs, pelvis ring & femur. She’s had surgery to repair injuries to her kidney, pancreas, liver, & ovary. Her spleen had to be removed upon arrival. Her lungs have been her most critical issue when she went into acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). She has had 12 chest tubes and has a collapsed left lung currently.
Kayla has come a long way but still has a lot of needs to continue to recover.
She’s able to show facial expressions on her right side, talk (mostly repetitive due to TBI). She cannot move her right side or eat/swallow so speech therapy is important. Hopefully she can retrain her brain so she can eat by mouth one day, she wants to so bad. Her digestive system & organs are also paralyzed on the left side. All of these must be exercised so her brain will remember how they worked & get back to it.
Her left arm & leg are the same so physical & occupational therapy are very important so her brain will rewire. Her right arm does work but like her words most of her movements are repetitive so therapy is needed to retrain. When she’s focused she is able to control it and she remembers how to count, sign I love you, peace, ok, high fives & a few others! Her right leg started moving a week ago but hurts very bad due to the bar in her femur and screw in her pelvis. She still works hard even while in pain because she wants to walk again one day. She’s so strong!
I’ve been with McKalya since the crash, I go where she goes. Unfortunately just because our world stopped the bills are still due. Donating to this fund will help pay our bills, food and needs while at the hospital. It will help with her medical bills that are already piling up and future needs for her long term therapy.
Due to McKalya being on state insurance she is being discharged home within the week and we don’t feel she is ready. She will need supplies for lung care, feeding tube care, organ care, wound care, lots of medication and equipment.
We will be making my older two daughters house accessible for her and we will all care for her for the time being at their home. We’re in hopes that we get her strong enough for rehab. I’m not sure what insurance will provide so I want to be proactive and make sure i have the supplies to take care of her in the home. If and when she gets into rehab again state insurance only covers so much and we want to be able to put her through therapy so she can recover as much as possible.
We have been very careful about any pictures posted of McKalya because we wanted her consent. She has agreed to the pictures below to show how far she has come.
Kayla says thank you and she loves you all. Please continue to pray for her, we know God has prepared an amazing testimony of his power through her ♥️
