Hello, we are the parents of an amazing daughter & son-in-law and grandparents of three awesome grandchildren.
Our daughter and her husband do not like to ask for help; they are pretty independent, but I think they need help (that we cannot give alone) with this situation.
They had a car gifted to them 6 months ago. It broke down while driving and would not start. They have had a mechanic take a look at it, but he was unable to determine the cause of the issue. Without the car running, it is an oversized paperweight and cannot be used as a trade-in.
They live paycheck to paycheck (not beyond their means) in a 1 BR house and share one car. Our daughter stays at home to take care of the kids and household, while our son-in-law works to provide for the family. They do not receive any assistance otherwise. They share the car between the two of them; our daughter takes/picks our son-in-law up from work, while taking/picking kids up from school and handling household stuff in between. Our son-in-law has just started a new job, which is making it difficult to finance from a dealership (he does not have at least 6 months verifiable income with the company) without a substantial down payment.
We are asking to help them out with the down payment on a car that they can rely on.
