Giving back to your community involves utilizing your resources, whether time, skills, or money, to help others and improve your local area. It can encompass volunteering, donating, or simply being a good neighbor. Growing up in Liberia, my country of birth, life was challenging. My late grandmother, Ma Kebbeh, would sell food to make ends meet and care for me while my mother was away in another country due to the civil war. My grandmother, Kebbeh, raised me and ensured I received an education, enabling me to become the person I am today. May her soul rest in perfect peace. Due to the civil war, my mother had the opportunity to travel to America for a better life. My grandmother and I were thrilled to hear that my mother had arrived in America, the land of opportunity. In 2008, I lost my grandmother, and my mother returned to Liberia for the first time after the civil war to lay her to rest. Meeting my mother for the first time after the civil war in my country was overwhelming; we had a great time together, and she met my childhood sweetheart, Nimely H. Kartwe, for the first time. After the funeral, my mother traveled back to America and filed for me to join her. I came to America in 2010 and left my sweetheart, Nimely, back in Liberia. I kept the communication between us, and in March 2016, I traveled to Liberia and got married to Nimely In 2029, my husband and our adopted son, James, joined me for a better life. Since my husband arrived in America, he has been my support system, and we both decided to give back to our community. Given our upbringing, we decided to give back to my community by donating food to the elderly and children in our community, 11 Street Sinkor, every holiday, such as Christmas and July 26. As I never had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas or July 26 as a child, we chose to celebrate with our community by giving back to the elderly and children.
