Donate to Educate: Projector for Orphaned Kids in Ethiopia
Donation protected
To give you some background of the situation, there are many children living on the streets of this city in Ethiopia. A lot of these kids are refugees from a war that happened 2 years ago in the North of the country.
Since they fled, none of these kids have seen their fathers, and many haven’t seen their mothers….they're completely on their own or have other kids they’ve banded together with. If they’re lucky, they still have a mom.
My name is Adam Peña and I am currently living in Denver, CO. My best friend and his grandfather (with the help of a local outstanding citizen named Rezene) started a kitchen in Dire Dawe, Ethiopia to help feed the kids living on the street in the worst conditions you could possibly imagine (sleeping next to piles of trash and human feces).
The kitchen has now been running for over 2 years and blossomed into a family.
These kids are no longer starving, we have gotten many of them homes, we have hired a doctor to provide medical care and education, and we’ve even started a project for the moms to rent shops so they can make money and be self-sustaining.
That being said, they are not self-sustaining yet, and we cannot buy everything on our. There are limits to personal budgets.
That is why we are starting this gofundme…that way anytime small things come up like buying a projector, we can meet that goal.
The purpose of the projector is so our doctor can better educate the kids on:
1) Proper Hygiene
2) Safe vs Unsafe Water
3) Preventing Disease (like Dengue Fever, Measles, etc.)
4) Drugs (like sniffing glue and a local cocaine-like substance called t’chat)
5) Many, Many More Topics Beyond Just Health….
These kids are in dire need of the most basic education that back home we take for granted. This past week, I found myself struggling to explain to the kids why they needed to use soap to wash their hands (language barrier and all). Then I saw kids sniffing glue in plastic bottles, a little 5 year old had measles and was running around touching all the other kids, and I saw children bathing in what I can only describe as a toxic soup of runoff from a local factory here.
A projector is a tool, one of many we can use here to improve the quality of life exponentially for these kids. If 1 person gives $300, we meet our goal. If 10 people give $30, we meet our goal. If 100 people give just $3, we meet our goal.
When you give, the money will go straight to the kids. If we are able to buy a projector and projector screen for less than $300 (unlikely due to low supply and low demand here), any leftover money will be used to buy school supplies: pencils, notebooks, erasers, etc.
You are welcome to give any amount you can afford. Generosity is compassion in action. And these kids and myself are forever grateful for any of your generosity.
