Hello!

PY285- a class here at Huntington University, has been prompted to pursue a service project that would involve serving the community. We are partnering with "United With Love" to get food to those in need! Dr. Babb is donating $100 if we can match that, let's get even more!

Lately, the federal program known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which usually provides food-aid benefits to millions of low-income Americans, is now being disrupted due to a federal government shutdown.

Prior to the shut down the federal government had fully funded SNAP benefit payments. Now the federal share of administrative costs is being reduced, meaning states will bear more of the burden and benefit increases tied to food cost inflation may be capped or delayed, reducing purchasing power over time.

What this looks like for our community:

The maximum reduced benefit for November is approximately $149 per month for a one-person household and $497 for a four-person household, though many will receive less based on their income. The average grocery bill for a single person is $300-$500. This monthly income is unsuitable for one person alone let alone a whole family. At this point, the timing of future benefits will depend on the status of the federal government shutdown. If it continues, future benefits may also be reduced or delayed.

Our community is going hungry. While we are provided for others are struggling. If the Lord provides for us how much should we go and provide for others in reflection of his generosity and goodness? Matthew 6 talks about giving to the needy and how much more has to happen before it is realized that we are in a time of NEED! Matthew 6: 25 says, " “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" As Christ has provided for us, let us provide for others.

What is a day where we can sacrifice something of ourselves as Christ sacrificed his blood and flesh on the cross for us? May it be you miss a day of your favorite coffee, or maybe miss out on an item you really wanted. It could even be something that is quickly disposed of and forgotten quickly. But one act of kindness will live with these in need forever, knowing it was you, who gave up part of themselves for them, just as Christ did for us. Thank you.
