It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Harvey Hawryliw.

Ken leaves behind his wife and partner of 30 years, Alison, and their 13-year-old twins, Cooper and Madelyn.

Ken will be remembered for many things: his colourful stories, his sense of humour, and his infectious laugh. He was an award-winning Prop Master—a job he loved in an industry he loved—and worked on many iconic sci-fi series, including the original The X-Files television series, the re-make of Battlestar Galactica, and Arrow.

Unfortunately, Ken developed a rare blood clotting disorder that led to a stroke in 2019 and ended in cardiac arrest on February 19, 2026. He was plagued with many health complications in the intervening years, including debilitating nerve pain, fatigue, pulmonary embolisms, and severe swelling in one of his legs. This resulted in an inability for him to work more than a few hours a week from 2020 onward. The family got by mostly on their savings, Alison’s minimal income from her writing, and Ken’s disability insurance.

Now, however, Alison and the kids are struggling to make ends meet as the majority of their savings have been used up, and Ken’s small income from working as Props Chair for the union, and his disability insurance, ended with his death. In addition, there is no further insurance from the union due to Ken’s age.

In addition to caring for her children (and her recent care for Ken since he became ill), Alison also cares for her ailing, 95-year-old father at home.

Because of this, it is our hope that we can assist the family in rebuilding their lives by raising as much money as we can to help cover the many expenses ahead.
