As every UVA student, graduate, and Cville native knows, the corner is a special place with many locally owned restaurants and shops. I’m sure most of us couldn’t imagine our time at UVA without thinking about time enjoyed on the corner too.
Many small businesses on the corner are facing very hard times right now. Even during a typical UVA summer, some corner restaurants see up to an 80% decrease in monthly revenue when the majority of students head home for the summer. Many are seriously struggling right now due to the impacts of COVID-19, with nearly all students gone and very limited ability to serve even the folks who are still in town.
Unfortunately, there’s a chance that many beloved corner restaurants and coffee shops may be forced to close their doors before students can return to grounds.
We want to help those businesses stay open through the challenging months ahead, in the hopes that the corner remains a vibrant place where students and locals can come to enjoy food, coffee, and drinks.
Our goal here is two-fold though: by donating to this GoFundMe, you’ll support two groups in need.
We’ll use all money collected through this fundraiser to support World Central Kitchen’s efforts to feed local Charlottesvillians in need. Funds will be used to purchase meals from locally owned corner restaurants and distribute them to families in need and frontline workers. We hope these meals can help these employees and their families through tough times and serve as a gesture of thanks for their work.
We’ve already been able to donate 150 meals to furloughed UVA/Aramark workers from Pigeon Hole and Corner Juice.
Whatever you’re able to give right now, 100% of your contribution will go toward meals for those in need!So If you’ve ever enjoyed a sandwich from Take It Away, gotten your caffeine fix at Grit or Shenandoah Joe’s, grabbed a pick-me-up from Corner Juice or Juice Laundry, or if you haven’t even gotten to try one of the corner’s newest spots (Thyme & Co. and Pronto! pasta), now is the time to give back.
Thanks in advance for your support. We just want to do what we can to keep fellow corner businesses open and help those in need until we can see you all back on grounds. I can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to that day!
