Bhutanese Political Prisoners have been suffering for decades in Bhutanese prisons without having a small ray of hope of getting released. But the worst suffers are their families who spend days, weeks, months, years and decades waiting and dreaming for the return of their beloved sons, husbands, father, uncles etc., back home. Most of their elderly parents died without getting their dream fulfilled.

Those families who opted for the resettlement are living a better life. Still, they are mentally suffering due to the absence of their beloved ones. But those not resettled families are forced to live miserable lives with their bread earners in jails forever. We recently spoke with one of the most unfortunate wives of one of the serving political prisoners. Her agony makes everyone cry. Her army husband was arrested in 1991 for suspecting his involvement in the peaceful rally in September 1990 and is still in prison with no sign of his release. This is only the tip of the iceberg of such agonies of innocent and completely ruined families.

In addition, there are those recently released political prisoners who are also direly suffering due to the torturous punishments they sustained while in prison. Such people have no source of income to buy medicines and other essentials and are in dire need of financial support. Some released political prisoners are even denied refugee identity cards depriving them of the fundamental right of being called a refugee in a refugee camp. They are deprived of any facilities the registered refugees have in the camps.

Thus, considering the above miserable situation, this fundraising campaign to support at least 20 needy families has been launched.

Therefore we request all kind-hearted people to donate whatever amount they can to support the cause. Let us all contribute a little so that they could celebrate this year’s dasain festival with smiles on their face.
