I’m a reader, a daughter to my mother, an English major, and my father, an author. As an adult, I’ve grown a new appreciation for what books have offered me: inspiration, compassion, education, and most importantly, an outlet to challenge myself.
My goal here is to encourage others to challenge themselves as well. Over 50% of adults in the U.S. read below a 6th-grade reading level. This is a failure of our education system and our government, a failure that will only be exacerbated by book bans, which I’m ashamed to say, are happening here in Georgia.
All money raised will be used to purchase commonly banned and challenged books, which in turn will be donated back to the community, where anyone will be free to pick one up at one of the many “Little Free Libraries.” I will do my best to reach as many as I can.
All money will be used to buy copies of:
- The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
- The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
- Looking for Alaska by John Green
- The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
- Flamer by Mike Curato
- Animal Farm by George Orwell
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
- The Giver by Lois Lowry
- The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
“A patriot must be concerned with the real world, which is the only place where his country can be loved and sustained. A patriot has universal values, standards by which he judges his nation, always wishing it well—and wishing that it would do better.” - Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.
Thank you, love you.
