Documentary Queer Uganda by Stichting Echos v.d. Samenleving
Donation protected
After the installment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act in May last year, the Ugandan LGBTQ+ community is severely persecuted, intimidated, and threatened. Activists and human rights lawyers have had to stop their work or have fled the country for their safety. The stories about how LGBTQ+ people in Uganda are rejected, betrayed, and disinherited by their own families, friends, and neighbors are heartbreaking.
In the early spring of this year, we, a group of filmmakers, visited Uganda as volunteers to secretly document the stories of 7 queer people. We wanted to give a voice to a group stripped of their humanity. These people want nothing more than to be who they are and to be accepted as human beings. In a time when Uganda's queer voices are being silenced, we're here to bring you their whispers.
The donations for this GoFundMe will be used to finish, promote, and distribute the documentary. Any donations left after we have paid for the documentary's costs and any proceeds from the documentary will be donated to specific groups helping the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda.
Unfortunately, we cannot disclose the names of the groups we are funding because doing so would put them in great danger. One thing they all have in common is that they want to stay in Uganda to improve the lives of the LGBTQ+ community. They help the community with legal assistance, medical support, skill building, and basic human needs such as food and shelter.
Some groups we support do community outreach to bridge the gap between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ people.
Watch the teaser above to understand what the documentary will look like.
