Bail fund for people facing COVID in the P.G. County jail
An urgent movement across the country is underway. We are reckoning with police violence and abuse perpetrated against Black and Brown lives. Yet we cannot disconnect this visible violence from the violence inflicted on Black and Brown lives trapped inside inhumane jails, presumed innocent while awaiting trial, and without adequate medical treatment as the COVID pandemic spreads.
In the Prince George’s County jail, thousands are jailed pretrial, presumed innocent, awaiting trial indefinitely in horrifying conditions. Inside, there is an uncontrolled COVID outbreak fueled by the jail’s actions and sustained by the inaction of Aisha Braveboy, the state’s attorney. Today people face a possible death sentence, although the death penalty was abolished in Maryland years ago.
Life After Release is calling on you to donate to this bail fund to help release people now. The funds raised will be used to pay bail for those who are being held pretrial in Prince George’s County jail. Freedom shouldn’t be given to only those who can afford to purchase their release.
Life After Release is a women-based, formerly incarcerated-led organization located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Maryland. LAR provides support for the needs of formerly incarcerated women re-entering their communities. LAR also works to raise public consciousness about the inhumanity of money bail and pretrial detention and end these systemic injustices that keep our people caged.
These are just some of the conditions Braveboy allows people to be subject to:
People caged inside are locked in their small cells, often with another person, for twenty-three hours per day and are let out for only one hour to clean their cells, shower, and speak to their attorneys and loved ones.
Social distancing is impossible. People crowd around the phones for the precious hour outside of their cells. Cleaning supplies are watered-down and heavily rationed.
People who report symptoms are met with derision, indifference, and delays. Nurses and guards routinely ignore even serious symptoms of difficulty breathing, chest pains, and bloody excrement. People must fill out a “sick call request” to get medical attention and then wait three to five days for jail staff to respond, if they do at all.
Those who are COVID-symptomatic or test positive are locked in isolation cells coated in blood, mucus, feces, and urine, and denied access to showers, phones, clean clothing, and basic hygiene supplies.
