COVID -19 What Can I Do to Help?
Donation protected
“What can I do to help?” is something we have all heard on multiple occasions since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A week ago, my friend Joan and I “bumped into” (social distancing style) each other. We sat in our cars and discussed the need for a sense of purpose, and how we both desperately wanted to help.
By that afternoon, we had worked out an arrangement with a chef and a local hospital. We were ready to donate meals for its healthcare workers a few days later. With the help of the talented Brenden Crocker, owner and chef of Manchester’s Black Arrow restaurant, we delivered more than a hundred meals to the North Shore Medical Center in Salem last Tuesday. Next week, we plan to add Boston Children's Hospital to the schedule.
Our goal is to continue this effort for at least the next month, and to add other area hospitals to our route. The money raised will go to pay for the ingredients, containers, labels, bags and any other necessary items. At some point, we may need to add additional chefs to our team, so that we can fulfill more donations.
The healthcare workers have been consistently and fearlessly working to help all patients during this critical time. We continue to hear about the “crunch” all of them are feeling, as hospitals divert patients to their units. Just last night, one of the nurses reached out via text to thank us again for thinking of them, “I am so grateful you have thought about us. There are so many people in need and anything done for anyone is a gift of love.” Our contacts at each of the hospitals with whom we have spoken are so appreciative of our efforts.
Though we were able to cover the costs for our first delivery, we know that we need additional financial support to continue our efforts. Due to the incredible response from family and friends, we wanted to provide the opportunity for them to contribute and help, so we created a GoFundMe initiative. We hope you will consider supporting our project, and thank you in advance for your help. We will continue to keep you updated as we expand our efforts.
