Djillo Chouai Memorial
Donation protected
We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all our friends and family for their kind words and prayers following the painful loss of our father, Djillo Chouai.
We are bringing our father home and will lay him to rest at a small cemetery in Falls Church, VA on Friday. Given the current circumstances, we are having a small, private graveside ceremony that day to pay tribute to his life. Please, no flowers.
Many of you have asked us how you can pay your respects for our father’s life and our loss and we have spent the last week talking about how best to do that. We have talked amongst ourselves and with his family and friends in Algeria, where he was born, grew up, and lived for the last 12 years. We wanted to find a charity that reflects what we love and admire most about our father – his selflessness, how he put everyone else before himself, and how he wanted to help good people do the right thing, all without any type of recognition -- but we discovered that such charities do not exist there, at least in a manner that could accept donations.
So, on reflection, and with remembrance, we concluded that we want to continue the charitable work that our Dad was doing privately himself. Most recently, he was supporting three families in his hometown of Tiaret who had small businesses that were shuttered due to the challenges that COVID -19 has presented. These are families who Jarad visited when he was with our Dad during summers in Tiaret. Even though they had very little, and lived in homes without AC or many furnishings, they always welcomed us warmly, fed us, and cared for us. Now, their livelihoods are threatened and we would like to support them, just as our farther did.
We, ourselves, are sending money to these families to continue our father’s legacy of kindness and generosity. If you would like to join with us in paying this tribute to our father, please feel free to donate through this GoFundMe page in lieu of sending flowers or other form of memorial. We, Joe, Leila and Jarad, commit to ensuring that all funds contributed make their way to Tiaret.
