What on earth is Discow?

Conceptually, Discow is a large-scale, interactive art project that strives to drive community and connection for diverse audiences across multiple cities, starting with Black Rock City!

Physically, Discow is a giant, two-story mutant vehicle (art car) shaped like a cow with an 8-foot tall disco ball on its back. Discow is built from a previous art car, Headspace, with high-quality construction and playa-specific upgrades. The platform is a double-decker steel chassis running on a block engine. Discow’s panels are being fabricated out of steel and aluminum and are being wrapped in chromatic vinyl, making it look slick, holographic, and true to its Italo-disco inspiration. We take music and light seriously, outfitting the vehicle with a Danley sound system, high-end spotlights, LED neon flex, and two high-powered lasers for everyone to enjoy.

We are aiming to let the most riders ride the car of any car at Burning Man, with room for 100 beautiful dancing people and up to 30 bikes on board - with no restrictions on who can ride. We are also one of the few cars accessible for handicapped riders.

Who is crazy enough to build this thing?

We are organized as a camp at Burning Man - but above all, we are a cohesive team of 42 members bringing this project to life through our professional experience in design, engineering, creative production, and so much more.

We are an entirely community-funded and volunteer-run non-profit, officially registered as a 501(c)(3) organization. We do not have deep pockets behind us - through our hard work, we've built a dedicated community of small donors and received heavy discounts on equipment to make Discow possible. We would love for you to be a part of our team through your support!

What exactly is the point of Discow?

We are building a community around Discow with the mission of creating more enjoyable, safe spaces for musical counterculture. We intend to bring this mission to life by empowering a diverse array of artists and musicians to share their work through the physical and metaphorical platform our art car provides.

We hope to build inclusive experiences for audiences of all backgrounds to engage and play with this art, fostering community and creativity. We plan to bring this purpose to life on the playa and beyond at music festivals, community events, and art installations in a city near you!

What is my money going toward?

Discow is a capital-intensive project that requires a total of $183k. Major costs include acquiring the vehicle's frame, building the interior and exterior, outfitting the car with the latest lighting and sound systems, building the biggest disco ball on the playa, and ensuring the vehicle meets the high-quality technical standards we require for everyone to enjoy this project with guaranteed structural safety.

Thanks to the significant contributions we've received from our camp leads, members, and patrons, we are now at the home stretch with just $25k left to go!
