Disability support for Nepal communities.

OUR MISSION: to improve the prospects and lives of marginalised communities and peoples in Nepal and beyond. To create a sustainable model that empowers communities to support each other and develop a strong foundation to build on.
MY STORY:
In 2015 I had the amazing experience on going to Nepal, in a nutshell it changed the direction of my life. The 7.9 Earthquake happened and I found myself in the midst of Nepal facilitating Relief missions to remote areas. During this time we helped support many communities and I met my husband Govinda a local from Baglung Nepal. Together we helped raise many funds and distributed these to many grassroots projects in Nepal.
Since then we have met Prem the Director of Karma Flights Organisation and we have continued our best in trying to support local projects whenever we could.
Now 9 years later, I have made the scary but purposeful choice to step up and dedicate my time to Nepal health projects and to support remote communities.
WHY?
My son recently married the beautiful Rosni and through this relationship we have become increasingly aware of the need for more education and support in the disability sector in conjunction with general health issues. Rosni is a nurse in Nepal and also through her brother Roshan she knows the health sector in Nepal very well.
Roshan was born 11 years ago and whilst the birth seemed somewhat normal weeks later Roshan was rushed to hospital with severe jaundice and other complications that were diagnosed as Meningitis.
Unfortunately for Roshan this caused damage to his brain and his development was thwarted. It has been a difficult time for the family as there is little to no real understanding in Nepal of how to support children with this condition and many other debilitating conditions.
Nepali people often believe that these things are finite and the cause of bad Karma which can and often does open the door for a myriad of other stigmas and ostracisation of people with disabilities. Luckily for Roshan his family loved him and did their best to support him.
In the past few years Govinda and I have run tours to Nepal and through this we met an amazing woman Amanda from Bendigo, Australia, whom started to help with Roshan's care by sending money to a better equipped school. Since then we have seen Roshan develop in leaps and bounds. Now Roshan has fine motor skills that a few years ago seemed impossible.
Now we have come together and decided it is high time we try to gather a community of dedicated health professionals and facilitate programs that enable more children like Roshan to get the extra help and support they need to grow and develop and become the best version of themselves.
Because Nepal has no pension and no social security there is no funding to support people like Roshan later in life, so when the parents pass on, people with disabilities often end up on the streets.
We want our program to change this future for these people wherever possible.
We want to set up programs in Nepal in remote areas too with Karma Flights Organisation that support disability and health in Nepal and improve the prospects for Nepali people that are marginalised due to health issues or their location that are causing barriers for them.
We know it is possible because of Roshan, and now we need your help.
A little goes a long way in Nepal and because of this, we know that you can help with the smallest of generosity.
Watch this space as we continually update with new information and learn more about how you can support this cause.
1. Take our first group of willing practitioners to Nepal October 2024 to run a Three day workshop for local Nepali Health workers that will change perceptions of the disability sector and a focus on preventative health measures. More to come on this soon. Guests will fund the bulk of their travel costs. Funds will be needed to facilitate the program.
2. Raise awareness through a short film that educates people on health and wellness for Nepali communities and also a short film for our supporters to show them how their funds and or support can help. In particular to try and remove the stigma around disability being a lifelong curse and that they can improve and develop with the right support. Funds required to help pay for the film development.
3. Raise enough funds to set up a speciality school in central Nepal for marginalised and disadvantaged children to attend to learn life skills and improve their quality of life. Funds required to build or refurbish a school and employ staff.
4. Support and fund outposts/health camps around Nepal in remote regions that can help access these communities and offer them avenues for support. Funds required to stock the Health camps and educate locals by supporting health workers to stay onsite for extended periods.
5. Continue to run our tours/treks with Karma Flights Organisation to raise awareness and encourage people to visit Nepal. 10% of profits from all tours will go to projects above and smaller ones.
6. Ensure our model is sustainable and can create a legacy in Nepal that improves the lives of all.
