After hurricane Sandy devastated NYC (where I was raised), I partnered with some friends to create a direct action relief team of volunteers. We did supply drives and brought food, clothes, blankets, flashlights and batteries to stranded elderly people, and vans full of volunteers to help bail out homes in Far Rockaway. We raised funds and I used them to directly buy supplies and bring them to food banks and shelters as they posted that they needed them, since the Red Cross was nowhere to be seen.
Now I intend to do the same thing with Northern California. The Redwood food bank is in need of non perishable foods, as are a number of shelters in the area.
Next week I'm going up to San Francisco and will rent a truck, fill it with supplies as listed by demand on food bank and shelter websites, and deliver them myself with any volunteers who care to join me.
I estimate I'll be able to fill four trucks myself. I will keep going until all donated funds are spent.
This is a direct action response organized by me, without affiliation to any major organizations.
I will post receipts for all supplies purchased. All supplies purchased will be in direct response to needs posted by local shelters and food banks. Funds will only be used to purchase and deliver supplies as efficiently as possible. Thanks!
