Dignity for All at Chikurubi Prison

Chikurubi Prison is a maximum security facility located on the outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe. The prison is infamous for its overcrowding and poor conditions. The facility houses more than 10,000 inmates of which a small number are women.
My name is Rochelle Nyatoro. I am a Zimbabwean living in Sydney Australia. My father is a prison chaplain at Junee Correctional facility in Wagga Wagga, NSW. He is visiting Chikurubi prison qs part of his next trip to Zimbabwe. While making plans for this trip, the chaplains at Chikurubi shared that one of the biggest challenges of the facility has is providing sanitary items for the female inmates.
The prison has also shared that they are in desperate need of supplies for the infants and children living with their incarcerated mothers because there is no one else to care for them. Some of these little ones were born in Chikurubi and have never known life outside of rhe prison. We are looking to raise funds to provide food, children's items and hygiene supplies for the men, women and children at Chikuribi Prison.
We have reached out to local organisations such as the Talia Women's Network to provide the hygiene Dignity Kits for the women. Talia is a social enterprise founded to empower young women, girls and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease and social injustice. They empower disadvantaged women through skills development and create employment opportunities for them in the production of the pads.
Your contribution not only restores dignity to women in prison, it also empowers the women who earn their living and support their families through the production of the reusable sanitary items. Each dignity kit costs about AUD$15. We are aiming to provide kits for 150 women. The food and children's supplies will be purchased and donated directly to the women and children at Chikurubi.
The donations will be accepted by ZPCS Chaplain General Assistant Commissioner Robson Madzivanyika who has helped coordinate the visit and donation.
