Diego I. Gamboa's Eagle Scout Project
Donation protected
My name is Diego I. Gamboa and I’m a Boy Scout at Troop 438. I’ve been in scouting for many years, starting as a Cub Scout in first grade, bridging into Boy Scouts, and now a Life Scout at 17 years old. To finally achieve the Eagle Scout rank I need to complete a service project for the benefit of the community. After getting my idea approved, I’m now fundraising to get the money needed to make it happen
My project is a variety of improvements to the Amelia Mayberry Park Senior Center, located at 13201 Meyer Rd, Whittier, CA 90605, to make the outdoor courtyard better. On the south side is the senior center building and on the northeast side is the computer center. The west and north sides are surrounded by walls and metal fencing. The northwest side is also where a dirt patch, some plants, and 4 planters are located. The northeast side has a few concrete benches underneath the overhang of the computer lab. The most important change I am making is an alteration to the raised planters. Two will be repurposed and stacked on top of the others. This will raise the height of the two planters making them easier to use and will make the surrounding area more open. To get the garden started, these planters will also have vegetables planted in them. Some other changes are being made to make the area look better. Old paint will be scraped off and replaced with new paint on the metal fencing. Mulch will be put along the perimeter of the dirt patch with new plants. To fix the issue of water pooling on one corner of the dirt, rain diverters will be installed. Finally, some more shade will also be provided with the installation of shade sails. Overall the senior center’s courtyard will be a cleaner, more open space, with altered planter boxes made to encourage use again.
This project is being done for the benefit of the community and its seniors. The senior center provides a place for them to get out of the house, socialize, and join activities. As of now they stay in a small building without any outside view. By making these improvements to the courtyard, it will be a nicer place for them to do activities and garden outside. Making the planters taller is part of this project to make the planters easier to use. With taller planters, the seniors will be able to use them and garden without having to strain themselves by bending down too far. When the seniors aren't using it, this area will also be used by the rest of the park. My project also makes the area nicer, but also more open so other things can be done with the area. The park could plan more events and also have this area as a place to host them. This project serves to improve the senior center and the park as a whole, in turn benefiting the community that enjoys and uses the park.
The money I receive will all be dedicated to buying the necessary supplies for my project. Every dollar is useful and I’m incredibly grateful for any help I receive.
