Diabetes Awareness: Don't Sugar Coat it

Donation protected
Andy Towne had a great sense of humor a generous and caring heart.  With his wonderful smile and exuberant personality, he made friends wherever he was during his life.

Andy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 9. He worked hard to manage his diabetes while balancing school, sports, and later his career. Unfortunately, on March 6, 2011 his medical insulin device failed and unexpectedly took his life.

While Andy was always fortunate enough to be able to afford his medical supplies and care to manage his diabetes, his family knows the mental, physical, and financial toll this disease can take on a person and their loved ones.   In effort to increase awareness and help others with diabetes in their community, the Andy Towne Memorial Endowment (ATME) was established to support diabetes education, services and supplies to treat and prevent diabetes, and related health concerns, in our region.

ATME generously donated funds have transferred over to the management care of Partnership for a Better Health. Together during diabetes awareness month, November, we are sponsoring a seminar at Project Share, providing diet and nutrition information to help diabetics and their families make healthy choices.

Also, during diabetes awareness month, we are working on launching a diabetic sport and merit scholarship to a local high school student.  Our hope is to recognize a talented athlete with diabetes who is successfully managing their diabetes by demonstrating ability to balance both school work and sporting commitments. The money can help offset some of the cost of college/university for the recipient and their family, who are already burdened with additional expenses associated with diabetes care.

Andy's family has been humbled over the years with not only the generous donations from friends and family, but the community as well.  Andy's parent's John and Amy Towne, will match the total donations raised during this campaign up to $3,000. Please help us reach our goal as well as raise awareness for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
