First I just want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey so far. I am a Junior at the University at Albany studying Human Development. This semester I recently got the opportunity to study abroad in India. This program will not only give me exposure to another country but also a chance to engage through hands-on experiences like building houses, children's homes, and other facilities for poor communities. The program will also introduce me to Indian society and culture by focusing on three areas – culture, peace, and development. It will focus on Global Citizenship and engage me in issues related to children's rights, education, gender, livelihood, poverty alleviation, rural and sustainable development. I will work with at-risk children and be involved in activities such as teaching English, math and creative arts, and introducing new sports to the children. I will also facilitate and participate in discussion forums with their peers in India. I am from the South Bronx and studying abroad was just a dream but now I am turning my dreams into reality. Growing up homeless I never thought I would be where I am today. Going to college was a study abroad experience in itself, and now that I get the chance to leave the country it will help me be a bigger aspiration to others from my community and background that no matter where you come from you can reach your goal with hard work. I plan to be the president of a university while running a nonprofit organization and with this experience it will help enhance my look on the student life as a whole because I will be seeing the life of a student from a different country. Being in college I am paving the way for others and studying abroad would just enhance the experience not just for me but for everyone around me.
