I’m taking on the challenge of walking from Derry to Belfast to raise funds for The People’s Kitchen Belfast — and to encourage meaningful conversation around social justice and housing policy.

This walk is about more than the distance. It’s about standing with people experiencing homelessness and food poverty, and calling attention to the ongoing failures within our housing system. In particular, it highlights the impact of people seeking temporary accommodation being placed far from their support networks, sometimes without funded transport. This can place additional emotional, financial, and practical strain on individuals and families at an already incredibly difficult time, and it’s an issue that deserves far greater care, attention, and accountability.

Charities like The People’s Kitchen Belfast are left to pick up the pieces — providing hot meals, food parcels, dignity, and community support to people who are being failed elsewhere. Their work is vital, but it should not be needed at the scale it currently is.

This walk is inspired by Rory Sloan and Christopher Eats, who previously walked from Derry to Belfast and raised over £5,000 for the Belfast First Wellbeing Hub. Their efforts showed how collective action can make a real difference, and this walk aims to build on that spirit.
