A few Derry Rovers members have decided to jump out of a plane, but we are not alone, joined by some runners and other folk that do be in a rush.

Joking aside, why are we doing it.

After seeing the need for an AED in Brians Park we contacted the newly formed Edenderry Community First Responder (CFR) Group to see if they could advise on how to go about getting one.

Following their guidance and help, and some initial fund raising for this event, not only did we install the AED but it is 24/7 available to the community and critically it is tracked and managed by Edenderry CFR – so it is ready should it be needed.

For those of you that don’t know, Edenderry CFR are qualified volunteers who assist

the HSE & National Ambulance Service (NAS) in the locality with cardiac arrest, stroke & chest pain incidents while awaiting an ambulance.

Time is very important when an unconscious person is not breathing. Permanent brain damage begins after only 4 minutes without oxygen, and death can occur as soon as 4 to 6 minutes later. The sooner the responders are able to start automatic defibrillation along with quality CPR, the more chances for the patient to make a good recovery.

Survival from a cardiac arrest in our community is less than 1 in 10. With the impressive plans Edenderry CFR have for installing public AEDs, training the community in there use, and building up a network of responders they hope they can significantly improve our chances, as is proven in many communities across the globe.

So, in short, now that we have an AED in the club we want to try and raise enough for another location, or maybe more – its down to your donation!
