I am a social worker at a high school in Brooklyn. It recently came to our attention that one of our students attending one of our schools in the building was violently deported alongside her dad back to Ecuador. On Tuesday, December 12th they both attended their Immigration and Customs’s Enforcement (ICE) check-in. With little information provided, they were told that they would not be leaving the court that day and that they were going to be put on a plane to Ecuador. The student's mom shared that the father and student had the appointment at 8:00am and at 12:40pm she received a call from the student informing her that they were going to be sent away, no explanations were provided. The student and father arrived in Ecuador the next day.

The student and her family had been living in New York City for about 3 years now, and the student just recently started high school. The trauma and pain that the family is currently experiencing is unbearable. The mom remains in NYC with her 2 young kids and no other family members.

The student and father were deported with what they brought to the check-in, and were unable to say bye to the mom and unable to retrieve any personal items, including money. The father was the main provider for the family, and now mom has to come up with some income to get by, to support herself and the kids here, and the student and dad in Ecuador.

We are coming together in support of our student and the family to provide some support that can cover the financial stressors as a result of this painful separation.

Your contributions will help the student and father in Ecuador alleviate some of the financial burdens (again, they were unable to take anything with them), and the mother and her 2 children here in NYC to pay for rent, food, and any other emergencies that may arise. Furthermore, mom and her children have upcoming immigration court check-ins, which only adds more difficulty and fears to this.

Part of the funds will go towards covering at least the next 3 months of rent+utilities, so that the mom and her children can have secure housing as they navigate this horrific time.

Additionally, we are calling on the Department of Education, the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Affairs and the current mayoral administration to do a thorough review of how immigration policies are detrimental to our students and their families, given that this is not an isolated case, and formulate a system that will put an end to these deportations and stop the traumatization of immigrant communities.

Mi nombre es Melissa, soy trabajadora social en una escuela secundaria en Brooklyn. Con poca información les dijeron que ese día no saldrían del tribunal y que los subirían a un avión con destino a Ecuador. La mamá del estudiante compartió que el padre y la estudiante tenían la cita a las 8:00 am y a las 12:40 pm recibió una llamada del estudiante informándole que los iban a despedir, no le dieron explicaciones. La estudiante y el padre llegaron a Ecuador al día siguiente.

La estudiante y su familia habían estado viviendo en la ciudad de Nueva York durante aproximadamente 3 años y la estudiante acababa de comenzar la escuela secundaria. El trauma y el dolor que vive actualmente la familia es insoportable. La madre permanece en Nueva York con sus dos hijos pequeños y ningún otro miembro de la familia.

La estudiante y el padre fueron deportados con lo que llevaron al check-in, y no pudieron despedirse de la madre ni recuperar ningún artículo personal, incluido el dinero. El padre era el principal sostén de la familia, y ahora mamá tiene que conseguir algunos ingresos para sobrevivir, para mantenerse a ella y a los niños aquí, y la estudiante y al papá en Ecuador.

Nos unimos para apoyar a nuestra estudiante y a su familia para brindarles algún apoyo que pueda cubrir los factores estresantes financieros como resultado de esta dolorosa separación.
