Ortiz lived in Maryland for 23 years while supporting his family building patios and retaining walls. On September 29, 2025, he was detained by ICE on his way to work. After a week in detention, he signed deportation papers. His wife Dalia* explains that he couldn’t tolerate the conditions. Those who would not sign papers were punished. Ortiz and Dalia had no money for a lawyer.

Dalia is now a single mother of four children, ages 7 to 17, all American citizens.

Their seven-year-old son has both Downs Syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, and has undergone three open heart surgeries. He is often sick, and gets nourishment through a feeding tube. Caring for him requires money for diapers and medical supplies, and, of course, considerable attention.

Seeing his mother’s burdens, the 17-year-old has taken it upon himself to try to fill his father’s shoes. As the only one who can drive, he takes his mother and brother to doctors’ appointments. And he has taken on a part time job to help cover expenses. Your support is crucial to helping him finish high school.

Dalia is a skilled seamstress with 10 years experience. She also makes children’s clothing for sale, using every scrap to create small items like coin purses and hair scrunchies. She lights up talking about her creative sewing, and is happy to provide alteration services. But she was sick in December and January and couldn’t work.

Dalia needs help to cover basic expenses while she builds her business, and help with her youngest son’s care.

We can provide hope and care to this family during a difficult time. We can show them that they are not alone, and that many Americans welcome immigrants and the work they do.
