My name is Inez, I am part of a team of six dental students committed to making a difference in communities in need. For 15 days, we will be in Tanzania, providing essential dental care to those who have little to no access to treatment. Our goal is to help communities in need in Tanzania. There is a Dental Crisis with a severe lack of Dentists. Our goal is to help bridge this gap by offering free dental treatment and preventive care to communities and orphanages in desperate need.

Why Tanzania?

-Tanzania faces a severe dental care crisis. With a population of 66 million people and only 400 dentists—equating to one dentist per 165,000 individuals—the need for accessible dental services is critical.

-The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends one dentist per 7,500 people in developing nations, highlighting the stark disparity.

-Only 7% of primary healthcare facilities in Tanzania provide oral health services.

-43% of 5-year-olds suffer from untreated tooth decay.

-Many individuals endure severe pain and delay treatment due to a lack of available

dentists, leading to worsening oral health conditions and unnecessary suffering.

How do we plan to make a difference?

Over the course of our mission, we will:

-Screen and treat over 400 patients suffering from dental issues

-Provide care in a dental hospital, screen and treat patients in the local area in a hospital facility

-Provide Emergency Treatment, provide extractions, medications and pain relief

-Visit up to four orphanages to deliver oral health education and treatment to children, and provide them with toothbrushes

-Offer preventive treatments such as fissure sealants to reduce future decay to the children

-Set up a rural hospital camp to reach remote communities with no access to dental care

-Bring equipment and necessary supplies that can be used in years to come
