My name is Christoper Balding and I am an associate professor at Fulbright University Vietnam. I spend significant time in the United States yearly but am proud to teach in Vietnam a great and welcoming country. You can find my profile here:

I am raising funds to purchase goods and services for a research project about democracy and human rights promotion in Asia. The money will be used to pay for an assistant to do some technical work that I am unable to do myself. The people or businesses I will be paying are independent third parties that are not connected to me. I am the ultimate beneficiary in that I am the responsible party that produces the research output but the objective is to publicize the findings to promote human rights and democracy.
I am making a strange request today. I am asking for help crowd funding a project but I cannot tell you what the project is. It is completely understandable why many may look at this request as some type of scam or other less than honorable request. Because of these very understandable issues, I seriously debated whether I should even make the request.
Let me try and address a few questions and concerns:
1. I will not personally receive any of the money. The money is earmarked for very specific purposes and is purchasing the needed goods and or services in the most cost effective manner possible.
2. This is not in anyway for a business or money making venture.
3. While I will not describe the specific scope of work for this project at this stage, anyone familiar with my work will be able to place the general subject.
4. To date, my team and I have put in enormous work and feel very confident in the early results from the project and what we have already finished. We do not have any guarantee of success but we feel very confident that we can achieve what we are targeting as our primary objective.
5. Based upon the project funding, I will consider bringing on board a small number of individuals something akin to “board members” that are informed about the project and ongoing progress.
6. I think it is important to emphasize that I am not actively disclosing the nature of the project due to both the nature of the project and how that may impact success of the project. Disclosing details about the project would publicly impact the project.
7. Funds will be withdrawn and paid directly to goods or service providers.
I fully understand potential concerns about lack of disclosing what the project is and I understand that. I thought long and hard before making this request, but I can guarantee the project has already accomplished some amazing things and I feel very confident about this specific aspect of the project for which the funds will be used. I hope you consider helping.
